One Sentence: Create a Blockbuster Promotional Video for Your Open Source Project
Have you ever found yourself in this situation?
You’ve spent over half a year working late nights on an open source project you believe in. Your GitHub code is neatly organized, and you’ve written several versions of your README. But when it comes time to promote it on social media, you feel like something is missing.
A static screenshot? Too dull. A text introduction? No one has the patience to read it all. Make a demo video? You open and close Jianying (CapCut), and finally sigh, “Forget it, maybe next time.”
A college student developer friend of mine created a pretty interesting frontend component library last year, but his stars were stuck at around 20-30. He complained to me: “I know my project isn’t bad, but I don’t know how to let others know it isn’t bad.”
That statement hits hard, but it’s indeed the real situation for many developers.
One Sentence, and the Video Is Ready
Recently while using Qwen Code, I discovered an interesting skill—oss-styles .
Simply put, you only need to say one sentence to Qwen Code:
Based on this skill https://github.com/QwenLM/qwen-code-examples/blob/main/skills/oss-styles/SKILL.md
Help me generate a demo video for the repository: https://github.com/QwenLM/qwen-codeThen it will automatically pull project information from GitHub, analyze the tech stack, statistics, contributor information, and finally generate a cinematic promotional video.
Throughout the entire process, you don’t need to:
- ❌ Open Jianying or Premiere
- ❌ Write scripts or think about storyboards
- ❌ Find materials or match music
- ❌ Adjust animations or align timelines
AI will help you do all of this.
What Does the Final Video Look Like?
I tried this with the Qwen Code project, and the generated video is about 30-40 seconds long, with tight pacing and unified visuals. It can be directly posted to Twitter, Xiaohongshu, Jike, or placed at the beginning of your project’s GitHub README.
👇 Here’s what it looks like:
Pro Tip: After the video is generated, it’s recommended to preview it yourself first. AI sometimes may have deviations in understanding the project. Fine-tuning the copy can significantly improve the final video quality.
Who Can Use This?
I’ve thought about this, and this skill is particularly useful in at least the following aspects:
1. Cold Start for Independent Developers
You’ve just launched a side project and want to promote it on Product Hunt or V2EX. A professional product video is more memorable than a dry text-and-image introduction.
2. University Students’ Open Source Assignments/Thesis Projects
Many computer science students have open source project coursework. Previously you might only submit a GitHub link, but now you can attach a video to play during your defense or presentation, which will greatly increase the impression score from teachers and classmates (ps, it’s really very useful).
3. Content Material for Tech Bloggers
If you write tech blogs or create tech videos and want to introduce an open source project, you can directly use oss-video to generate project introduction clips to insert into your content. This saves the trouble of screen recording and editing.
4. External Promotion for Company Open Source Projects
Many companies open source internal tools, but operations often can’t keep up. This skill allows development teams to quickly produce promotional materials themselves without waiting for designer scheduling.
5. Project Showcase for Hackathons/Tech Competitions
Time is tight, tasks are heavy, but demo videos are essential. Generate a video with one sentence, and spend the time saved on coding and tuning the demo.
How to Play?
If you already have Qwen Code, installing this skill is simple:
# Enter project directory
cd your-project
# Start Qwen Code
qwen
# Then directly tell Qwen Code
Based on this skill https://github.com/QwenLM/qwen-code-examples/blob/main/skills/oss-styles/SKILL.md
Help me generate a demo video for the repository: <your repository URL>"AI will automatically:
- Pull project information from GitHub API
- Visit the project’s official website to grab Logo and brand colors
- Analyze project positioning and tech stack
- Generate video clips for 5 scenes
- Synthesize the final video
If you want to adjust the style—such as changing colors, modifying copy, or adjusting animation pacing—you can also directly tell the AI. All code is open source, and you can freely modify the generated Remotion project.
The Power of Open Source: All code is open source, and you can freely modify and extend the generated Remotion project to create your own video style.
A Small Reflection
To be honest, when I first saw this skill, my first reaction was: the “facade” threshold for open source projects has finally been lowered.
In the past, only big tech’s open source projects had budgets to make exquisite promotional videos. Independent developers or student projects could only rely on the code itself to speak. But code can’t speak for itself, especially in this era of information overload.
Now, one sentence can generate a professional-level promotional video. What does this mean?
It means good projects are easier to be seen.
It means technical strength can be better communicated.
It means the open source community will become more lively and diverse.
I think this is pretty good.
Give It a Try
If you happen to have an open source project on hand, why not try this skill. Whether you want to increase your project’s stars, or simply want to see how AI understands your code, it’s quite interesting.
